Mr. Erich Betterman
Sub: Request for appointing the head of DW Bengali from Bangladesh.
We are regular listeners of DeutscheWelle’s Bengali service. Many of us have been listening to DW Bengalisince 1975, and for us it’s the most reliable source of news & viewsin Bangladesh.
We grateful to DW and the government of Germany for giving us the opportunity to listento a large variety of news & views from Germanyand Europe in our mother tongue‘Bengali’.
The people of Bangladesh sacrificed their lives during the 1952 language movement for the preservation and continuity of our mother language Bengali. In recognition of those sacrifices UNESCO declared 21st February as the International Mother Language day.
We the Bangladeshi listeners know that DWBengali was a gift from the German government on the occasion of the liberation of Bangladesh. And since 1975 many media experts from Bangladesh have worked in DW. Bangladesh is the main target area of DW Bengaliservice, and FM broadcast of DW Bengali is only available in Bangladesh. We are also grateful for that.
However, we have come to know that the head of DW Bengali Service Mr Abdullah Al-Farooq is going to retire from March2012. And we have also come to know that either his successor will be appointed from Kolkata or the post will be handed over to the South Asian chief Grahame Lucas.
We are greatly concerned by this. We request you sir to appoint the next departmental head of Bengali Service from Bangladesh.Only a seasoned and veteran journalist can ensure the continuation of DW’s language news service. Also, we believe that the Bangla departmentat DW was established to primarily cater to the audience of the state of Bangladesh. Moreover, the heads of Bengali services of BBC, VOA, Radio Tehran, Radio SaudiArabia, Radio Japan andRadio Veritas Asia are all from Bangladesh.
We therefore pray and hope that you wouldappoint the new head of DW Bengali Service from Bangladesh.
