[Dhaka Correspondent] ACC (Anti-Corruption Commission) Thursday submitted charge sheet against Chittagong mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury and two others in a corruption case. Abul Kalam Azad, an ACC deputy director, submitted the charge sheet to the court of chief judicial magistrate in the case filed in connection with embezzlement of over Taka 80 lakh from the corporation funds. The chief executive officer of the corporation, Imtiaz Hossain Chowdhury, and the chief engineer, Mokhter Alam, were also implicated in the charge sheet. Mohiuddin was arrested from his residence on March 7 and Imtiaz was picked up from his residence Wednesday. But Mokhtar remained absconding since the filing of the case.
The investigation officer in the charge sheet said the allegations brought against the accused were primarily proved, and they would be brought under trial. ACC deputy director Abu Mohammad Arif Siddique on May 27 filed the case with the Kotwali police station against the three for embezzlement of Taka 80,13,561 by operating a satellite television channel, Bijoy TV, without approval from the authorities concerned. Mohammad Shahidullah, superintendent engineer of the corporation, and Ahmed Iqbal Haider, director of Theatre Institute Chittagong, were also accused in the case but their names were excluded from the charge sheet.
ACC sources said the superintendent engineer died of a heart attack after he had been arrested in connection with the case while the allegations brought against the TIC director couldn’t be proved.
