Thank you, Edward Moore Kennedy

For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die. Like a childhood friend and mentor who has drifted apart but always held a special place in your heard, Senator Kennedy is being remembered in Bangladesh, and by...

15th August and Khaleda Zia’s birthday

Dear Mrs. Zia: We hailed your kind gesture when you paid your respects to Dr. Wazed Miah by visiting Sheikh Hasina’s residence. Even though you enabled and encouraged the criminal acts of your sons, we could live with that. There are charges of corruption against yourself, and given what the other politicians do, we...

Gen. Moeen’s last act: Disciplinary action against some army officers

Amader Shomoy reported this two days ago, but it was strangely absent from any other newspaper in Bangladesh. As a result, we were waiting for some confirmation before reporting it. The investigation conducted by the Army is over, and a 311-page report has been submitted to General Moeen U. Ahmed. The civilian report is due any day now, probably tomorrow. The Army report has one major revelation. The leaflets that were distributed were actually in circulation from February 23, and the BDR command staff...

A death, and a (momentary) return to civility

Dr. Wazed Miah, husband of the prime minister of Bangladesh, passed away earlier today. Our condolences to Sheikh Hasina, and their son and daughter. But in his death, Dr. Miah contributed to one of the rarest things in Bangladeshi politics: a civil gesture by Khaleda Zia.

Interesting and Incisive does not Truthful Journalism Make

Who is Sunita Paul? Some readers (MH, Zia) have left comments on a previous post about how Ms. Paul is a one-woman opposition party, and how her commentary is interesting and incisive. MH actually suggested that we were attacking the messenger instead of the message. Instead of responding in the comments, let us expound...

Sunita Paul: Deaf Dumb Born in an affluent family in Kochin Twice masters (what the hell is that?) A Fraud A Plagiarist, and A Liar The first 4 are very easy to prove. Let’s see what “Ms.” Paul put up as her biography on American Chronicle, a website that regularly publishes her writing.

Empty Vessels and Barishallya Logic

We occasionally profile a few insightful comments on the front page of the blog. One of our recent posts, Accountability and Distorted Truths” generated many comments on Shadakalo and E-Bangladesh that also merit space on the front page. Where email addresses were provided, we tried to to communicate with the commenters but in vain;...

Accountability and Distorted Truths

There are four major charges being leveled against the government’s handling of the BDR massacre. The first one is general: The government held back the Army, who otherwise could have prevented or minimized the murders The second one is much more specific. This accuses that after the amnesty was announced, and while Nanak and...

BDR Massacre: A Timeline

We start this post with our sincerest condolences to the friends and families of the fallen. For the record, we are calling this a terrorist act: not a mutiny. In any war, the first casualty is always the truth, and it is happening in Bangladesh right now. We believe truth and justice are the...
