:: Lt Col (Retd) Md Shahadat Hossain, psc ::
Iqbal Karim Bhuyan, commonly known among the officers of Bangladesh army as IKB, is one of the old faujians of Faujdarhat Cadet College (FCC) whom I first saw back in 17th August 1974 when I first entered cadet’s accommodation Shahidullah House of FCC, was our house prefect, an appointment of cadet college responsible for the discipline and over all matters of the cadets of respective house. That role model cadet leader of Shahidullah House has taken over the responsibility of Bangladesh Army as Chief of Army Staff on 25th June 2012. It is indeed exciting news to me personally and also to other ex Faujians which I am realizing now by reading joyful comments of different face book and email groups.
Lt Gen Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, the ex Quarter Master General of Bangladesh Army, whom I know very closely since 1974 for many good reasons and personal memories. The breaking news of new army chief instantly helped me to remember so many personal memories associated to him. The incident which first came to my memory is an emotional story indeed. I once became very sick suddenly when I was a cadet of class seven and used live at Shahidullah House, FCC . It was then evening and the distance from our living accommodation Shahidullah House to FCC hospital was more or less one KM, however, my House Prefect IKB didn’t hesitate but quickly decided to carry me on his solder up to hospital without wasting any time by reporting to others or calling transport which might would take longer time. He carried me by his shoulder up to hospital instantly. This untold personal touchy story helped me to respect and regard him in a different way although including my long active military career. He was also our one of the Directing Staffs (DS), I mean teacher, at our Defence Services Command and Staff College (DSCSC) located at Mirpur Cantonment when I was undergoing my military staff course, commonly known as psc.
In my whole service career I went to his office only once when he Chief of General Staff of Bangladesh Army and that was before my going for the assignment of United Nations duties as UN Military Observer for the second time in 2006. This visit was for very short duration where I just told him only one sentence, “Sir, please pray for me so that I may perform my duties according to the desire” while he also replied only a single sentence by saying, “Best of luck and hope you come back safe and oh yes, please do spend your spare time in abroad by reading professional books”. I now believe possibly that was the best possible blessings and advice to me from my the-then CGS.
Though I never had the opportunity to serve directly with or under him but I didn’t miss the opportunity to work being close to him after my retirement. It was in the year 2010 when the SAARC countries in particular and all Bangladeshis and people around the world in general have had witnessed the grand opening and closing ceremony of 11 SAF Games for which 9 Infantry Division was given the special responsibility to arrange those on behalf of Bangladesh Olympic Association. The then Major General Iqbal Karim Bhuyan was the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 9 Infantry Division during that time. It was really a challenging task due to time constrain and limitation of resources mainly. But GOC Maj Gen Iqbal karim Bhuyan with his special type of professional dynamism quickly organized everything to make the events, widely known to everyone, as grand success.
The new Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Army is such a professional personality who is always in the professional discussion among officers environment of Bangladesh Army. While I was writing this personal diary on 7th June I have received an email from one of our ex Chief of Army Staff who simply commented on the news of this new Chief of Army Staff as, “No doubt, this is the perfect choice”.
The elite and superior professional long career of Lt Gen Iqbal Karim Bhuyan is not a controversy history but the past and present role model to many other career officers of Bangladesh Army. He is known to all for his honesty, discipline and professionalism. He always used to take special care for his collogues and under command soldiers from the professional point of view wherever he was posted in his long career.
