The president has appointed quarter master general Lt Gen Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan as the new chief of Bangladesh Army.He will be promoted to the post of General when he takes office on June 25.
The incumbent army chief, Gen Abdul Mubin will retire on that day as the president also extended the tenure of Gen Mubin for 10 days. Gen Mubeen assumed the office of the Chief of the Army Staff, Bangladesh Army on June 15, 2009.
Lt Gen Bhuiyan served as a UN Force Commander and held important commanding positions including the GOC of the Savar-based 9th Infantry Division and the Chief of General Staff. He also headed the Defence Services Command and Staff College.
A cadet of the 3rd BMA Short Course, Bhuiyan went to Faujderhat Cadet College and was commissioned in the army in Nov 1976. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in May 2010.
The development came a day after the defence ministry announced Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Enamul Bari as the new Air Force chief for a three-year tenure with effect from June 12 when incumbent Air Chief Air Marshal Shah Mohammad Ziaur Rahman would go on retirement leave.
