[Dhaka Correspondent] BNP chairperson’s adviser, ASM Hannan Shah, Wednesday accused the interim administration of performing its activities going beyond the constitution and adopting dual policy that affects his party, “Government was not performing its duties in accordance with the constitution. If they did so, such situation would not have been created.”
“The jurisdiction of a caretaker government is limited by the constitution. It has to hold general elections within a stipulated time and transfer power to an elected government,” Hannan told newsmen at his Dhaka residence. “They have kept our office closed and it bars BNP to play the expected role as a party with nationalist ideals. The government is keeping the party office shut on the basis of a letter sent by Mannan Bhuiyan. It is not expected. We have the actual claim to the party office but it should not be destroyed keeping it closed. Rather it would be better to give it to them so that the office can stay alive.”
He was also vocal for freeing the party chief, Khaleda Zia, and said the party would strengthen its legal battle to free her.
Hannan, who acts as the party’s coordinator in absence of the chairperson, said the party has taken initiatives to strengthen its city committee and committees will also be formed at units where there are no committees.
Though the BNP secretary general, Khandaker Delwar Hossain, had said that only violence among political parties was not the lone cause for imposing the state of emergency, Hannan said the violent activities of certain political parties during October last year resulted in imposition of the state of emergency.
