Dear Aurpi,

My kudos again.

What I wanted to hear from a senior Indian military leader for last 39 years, you made me hear it.

"Last of all, I want to tell you something. The freedom fighters and the East Bengal Regiment, who with their limited resources fought a mighty regular army, earned the liberation of Bangladesh and it was their love for the country that made them victorious. We helped them, we were brothers in arms. But it was their fight, they fought it. They fought with passion and they achieved what they fought for. I give my heartiest blessings and share the pride for them. They are the gems your country should be proud of".

My heartfelt gratitude to your effort and achievement.

With profound regards,

-Trishonku.

"But some of the Indian army members also resorted to looting after the war. The First thing Bangabandhu asked Indira Gandhi as to when Indian Army was to be pulled out from Bangladesh. "

this is a canard generated by anti-indian elements in bangladesh. All the talk about looting and there is not one official report done by the bangladeshi government.

Its fashion to proclaim , India looted - but there is not one report, not one news story, not one article from 1972 that ever mentions looting by indian troops.

on the other hand india supported bangladesh with crores of aid, ships, aircraft, grains , forex and what not.

The genocide in 1971 was targetted to eliminate the Bangladeshi nation. But vailinat people fought the liberation war with active help and support of India. Bangladesh would have earned Independence even if Indians did not indulge into war against Pakistan. But that would have prolonged our struggle. US and China were actively supporting Pakistan. They could have intefrered. If we look at Palestine , COSOVO we can feel how nations struggled for independence for years. For Bangladesh it was relatively shorter but we lost 3 millions in 9 months. General Jacob, Fe Ield Marshall Manekshaw and Lt General Arora always acknowledged thr e role of Bangladeshi Liberation force in the liberation war. It was easy for Allied force to close the war so soon just beacuse Bangladeshi freedom fighters already weakened the Pak army.

Anyway we must also not forget the a Indian Armies contribution. But some of the Indian army members also resorted to looting after the war. The First thing Bangabandhu asked Indira Gandhi as to when Indian Army was to be pulled out from Bangladesh. Ultimately he managed to make them leave reasonably early. So considering all these we must evaluate the the performance of Indian Army in Bangladesh libeartion war.

Dear Omi Pial,

Thanks for providing a first hand info from Jacob. My comments on Mashuqur's post are equally applicable to yours regarding our razakars and al-badars. So, what Jacob did with Niazi - absolutely right.

1. The Islamists, like Jamaat’s role during liberation war once again has been confirmed with evidence. They did it with full knowledge of day-to-day killing of so many Mukti Bahinis and civilians.

2. Pakistanis were using Islam to make Bangladesh a colony (excerpt is given below) and our Razakars and Al-Badar leaders should be tried now for triple crimes - a) one for fighting against Bangladesh and b) the other for helping Pakis to make us colonised knowing we would be sub-human if Pakistan succeeded and c)thirdly for doing the above two in the name of religion. For the first point - one can relate it with their political conviction (which is also criminal), but for the second and third points - it is crime not only against us but also against humanity in general - there should not be any problem to convince prosecutors of International Court with these points. These animals must be tried. No more but and if. Cheers, AQ

The excerpt from the Sunday Times, 13 June 1971:
[”We are determined to cleanse East Pakistan once and for all of the threat of secession, even if it means killing off two million people and ruling the province as a colony for 30 years”. I was repeatedly told by senior military and civil officers in Dacca and Comilla. The West Pakistani army in East Pakistan is exactly doing that with terrifying thoroughness.]
