Dr. Wazed Miah, husband of the prime minister of Bangladesh, passed away earlier today. Our condolences to Sheikh Hasina, and their son and daughter.
But in his death, Dr. Miah contributed to one of the rarest things in Bangladeshi politics: a civil gesture by Khaleda Zia.
Khaleda Zia is under siege by the present government: it is trying to have her evicted from a house, proceeding with various corruption cases against her and her sons. and in general making her life difficult.
But for at least half an hour. the politics was postponed. Khaleda Zia and her entourage visited Sheikh Hasina’s residence, and expressed their condolences in person. Witnesses reported that Khaleda Zia hugged Sheikh Hasina, who was crying at that time.
This is a very nice gesture on the part of Khaleda Zia. Politics has become personal in Bangladesh, and the result is a lot of mud-slinging from both sides. Perhaps tomorrow it will be business as usual. But for a brief period of time, we caught a glimpse of what is possible.
We congratulate and thank Khaleda Zia for rising above politics.
